Since 1999, Avian Technologies has been active in the development of reflectance standards, materials and coatings, integrating spheres, and provision of measurement services for the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and optical industries.

Their diffuse reflectance materials and coatings are used throughout the world in a wide variety of industries. Applications for these coatings and materials are found in remote sensing devices, environmental/agricultural monitoring instrumentation, and as standards in biological/biomedical probes.

International Commission on Illumination
and ASTM
American Society for Testing and Materials
both specify either packed barium sulphate or packed polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder as standards for the measurement of diffuse reflectance. Warsash Scientific offer kits for the accurate and reproducible fabrication of such standards. Kits are available to produce both 25mm and 52mm diameter standards. Barium sulphate kit is available in 25mm size only.

The kits consist of a three part press, two calibrated cups for the production of the standards, and 500g of either highly purified barium sulphate or PTFE

polytetrafluoroethylene
powders which have been finely ground to remove lumps which may cause a reduction in reflectance from the literature reflectance values. Additional refills of the standard powders are also available. Instructions for use of the presses are included.

The fluorescent properties of the FTS (Professor Frederick T. Simon) tiles make them ideal for applications involving the measurement of fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) common in office papers. In measurement it is always good practice to use similar standards whenever possible.

Axiphos Plastic and UV

Ultraviolet
activated Chromatic Fluorescent Standards are used as secondary fluorescent standards for instruments measuring whiteness. These standards have extremely low gloss, are thermally stable, and exhibit high light-fastness.

Fluorilon-99W™

Fluorilon-99W™ is a stable white thermoplastic with extremely high diffuse reflectance. The material is both thermally (>300°C), physically, and chemically stable to all but the most hostile environments. The sintered PTFE

High Reflectance Diffuse Coatings

Avian-B

This is a well characterised coating that has been used for diffuse reflectance applications for more than 20 years. It is relatively easy and inexpensive to apply.

Avian-D

Avian-D coating is a two-part water based urethane coating uses a different pigment system than Avian-B and can be applied to a wide variety of substrates.

Avian-D coating is ideal for field applications where the coating will experience variations in temperature and humidity, such as calibration plates and remote sensing targets. It is ideal for large integrating spheres used in lamp measurement photometry where large amounts of UV

coating utilises practically any metallic substrate and is most effective in the 1.0-6.0 micron range. The mid-IR material is a new technology in IR

diffuse reflectance that combines Epner's plating expertise and sintered metal technology. This coating is best suited to applications in the 2 micron to 25 micron (or greater) wavelength range.

Reflectance of the NIR

Diffuse Black Coatings & Materials

Avian Black-S

This is a spray on, two part water based urethane coating that exhibits low reflectance over a wide wavelength range. The water-borne coating exhibits very low gloss and is quite durable compared to most low reflectance coatings. It is easily mixed and may be applied with standard spraying equipment. Clean up is easily done with water and detergent.

The coating passes and exceeds Mil spec for live agents and durability. It is a low VOC

Volatile Organic Compound
coating (<0.18kg/L) and is non-flammable as applied.

The reflectance is <3.5% over most of the UV-Vis-NIR

Ultraviolet-Visible-Near Infrared
and approximately 3% over most of the range.

Avian-DS Black

Avian-DS black is an etch-anodize process similar to what was known as Martin Black. Avian-DS, however, is even more absorbent of light. It is the blackest material that Avian Technologies have seen in almost twenty years in this field. Coating is limited to parts fabricated from aluminium. This is a batch process, so small lots tend to be very expensive but the coating is economical for large lots or OEM quantities. This coating can only be applied to aluminium substrates.

Avian-EP Black

Avian-EP Black is an electrochemical process that can be applied to almost any substrate including plastic or glass. The coating is highly diffuse but somewhat fragile, so its use in applications that require handling of the optical surface are not recommended.

Optically, Avian-EP Black is very highly absorbent in the UV-Vis-NIR

Ultraviolet-Visible-Near Infrared
and has better range than Avian-DS Black (above). The coating remains 'black' out to 7-8 microns.
