High Reflectance Diffuse Coatings

Avian-B

This is a well characterised coating that has been used for diffuse reflectance applications for more than 20 years. It is relatively easy and inexpensive to apply.

Avian-D

Avian-D coating is a two-part water based urethane coating uses a different pigment system than Avian-B and can be applied to a wide variety of substrates.

Avian-D coating is ideal for field applications where the coating will experience variations in temperature and humidity, such as calibration plates and remote sensing targets. It is ideal for large integrating spheres used in lamp measurement photometry where large amounts of UV

are not present.

Reflectance of the NIR

Diffuse Black Coatings & Materials

Avian Black-S

This is a spray on, two part water based urethane coating that exhibits low reflectance over a wide wavelength range. The water-borne coating exhibits very low gloss and is quite durable compared to most low reflectance coatings. It is easily mixed and may be applied with standard spraying equipment. Clean up is easily done with water and detergent.

The coating passes and exceeds Mil spec for live agents and durability. It is a low VOC

Volatile Organic Compound
coating (<0.18kg/L) and is non-flammable as applied.

The reflectance is <3.5% over most of the UV-Vis-NIR

Ultraviolet-Visible-Near Infrared
and approximately 3% over most of the range.

Avian-DS Black

Avian-DS black is an etch-anodize process similar to what was known as Martin Black. Avian-DS, however, is even more absorbent of light. It is the blackest material that Avian Technologies have seen in almost twenty years in this field. Coating is limited to parts fabricated from aluminium. This is a batch process, so small lots tend to be very expensive but the coating is economical for large lots or OEM quantities. This coating can only be applied to aluminium substrates.

Avian-EP Black

Avian-EP Black is an electrochemical process that can be applied to almost any substrate including plastic or glass. The coating is highly diffuse but somewhat fragile, so its use in applications that require handling of the optical surface are not recommended.

Optically, Avian-EP Black is very highly absorbent in the UV-Vis-NIR

Ultraviolet-Visible-Near Infrared
and has better range than Avian-DS Black (above). The coating remains 'black' out to 7-8 microns.
